Global health linkage

  • The next big push of the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation is to eradicate polio. The disease circulated in 125 countries only two decades ago, but with only four countries left to control the transmission, we are getting close to global eradication
  • UNICEF launched a report showing that the Millennium Development Goal which aims to drastically reduce child mortality is off-track
  • With respect to health-related Millennium Development Goals, safe water and hygiene are crucial factors. Clean water technology is developing rapidly, but there are still millions of people without access to safe water and hygienic toilets.
  • The fight against malaria may soon enter a new phase. Scientists are working on a new single-dose treatment that works differently to any other anti-malarial drug. The future one-pill-treatment will be far easier than current methods; trial results are expected by the end of next year.
  • The method used to detect tuberculosis has not changed much in 125 years. But now a new molecular test can diagnose TB and detect a drug-resistant form of it far more easily and cost-effectively than ever before.

Interpreting the Aid Review

This is the archive of a Lowy Institute blog which ran from January to April of 2011. It was published to debate the Gillard Government's independent aid review, which was then in its research and consultation phase. We offer this archive as a service to researchers and the general public.
